I am really excited to bring you another wonderful opportunity to walk country on this beautiful and rich land we live in.

This time it’s a little closer to home near Ulladulla in Meroo National Park in Budawang Country. This 3 day Aboriginal Cultural Retreat encompasses a sharing and understanding of each other and all living things whilst walking through pristine bushlands, visiting significant aboriginal sights and art gallery, sampling bush foods and visiting the beautiful Meroo Lake.

Those who have come on the Walk On Country retreats to Gulaga shared a very special experience that can only be felt and not explained. They have been inspiring, awakening, connecting, insightful and nuturing. This gave me inspiration to continue organising Walk On Country retreats to learn from our elder first Australians, experience the land’s energy and beauty, and have a yarn and a laugh.

Our respected hosts are Uncle Noel (traditional custodian of Meroo National Park) and his wife Trish (an awesome cook and songstress), whom I had the pleasure of staying with on their beautiful, peaceful, 100-acre property ‘Jamanee Gunya’.

A priviledged experience I would like to share with you.

I speak to many mothers wanting to do the right thing and buy healthier food for their kids and themselves. Unfortunately, marketers have realised that if they put ‘Gluten Free’ on their product packaging most shoppers will assume it is a healthy option…but far from it!

Most ‘gluten free’ products you’ll find on the supermarket shelves are made with processed carbohydrates, thickeners, emulsifiers, sugar, preservatives and yeast, and they are cleverly marketed ‘Gluten Free’ under names such as Pure-Bred. For someone suffering from digestive problems or intolerances, these products may be a worse option than choosing a good organic wholefood product. Why?

Firstly, I have been experimenting with gluten free alternative foods for the last 7 years for my daughter, and subsequently for myself. My daughter had major gut dysfunction, and through trial and error finding healthy alternative options, she now has a pretty good digestive system. So I write this blog based on my experience.

To maintain a healthy gut, the food that needs to be avoided is sugar. A healthy digestive system requires a healthy gut flora (friendly bacteria) to provide a natural barrier from ‘bad’ bacteria, toxins and parasites. Eating processed and sugary carbohydrates promotes the growth of ‘bad’ bacteria and species of fungi, such as, Candida, Streptococci and Staphylococci, which can cause various health problems and gut dysfunction if they get out of control.

If you are celiac and cannot tolerate any gluten at all, then when it comes to bread, a gluten free bread may be your only option…if you have to eat bread. Having said that, research studies have shown that even some celiacs may tolerate an organic sourdough traditionally made with a natural sourdough leaven (not baker’s yeast). This traditional fermentation process produces enzymes that break down the gluten protein in the flour in a process called ‘hydrolysis’. My daughter can tolerate Sonoma Spelt Sourdough that you can buy at Harris Farm and Thomas Dux stores along with other Sonoma sourdoughs.

So my advise here is don’t just read the attractive marketing razzle dazzle on the front of the packet saying ‘gluten free’ with all the big red ticks on the side. Turn to the back and read the ingredients…and if you don’t know what they are it’s likely your body doesn’t either!

I’ll be blogging more about wholefood alternatives

“Nature provides what you need” …in a weed.

I have an abundance of dandelion, which is a highly nutritious medicinal plant, growing as a weed in my garden. Many would have picked the flowers (the seeded head) to make a wish and blow the seeds into the air, yet don’t realise they’ve left the best part of the plant behind.

You can use every part of the dandelion plant – the leaves and flowers are great in salads or dried to make tea, and the roots can be dried and brewed as a coffee substitute. I pick and eat a couple of leaves before meals as a digestive and it’s an excellent liver tonic.

Food Fact from Dr Mercola:

Dandelions contain one of the richest sources of beta carotene of all herbs, numerous flavonoids (including FOUR times the beta carotene of broccoli), lutein, cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin, vitamins (including folic acid, riboflavin, pyroxidine, niacin, and vitamins E and C), a high source of vitamin K1, and minerals (including magnesium, calcium, potassium, manganese, and iron). Every part of the dandelion is edible and full of nutrition and its leaves are rich in dietary fibre.

So there you have it … feed from a weed.

That is, as long as you don’t spray it! (like they do on the current ‘Roundup Weedkiller’ TV ad).

So, as a parent of two children, whilst I wish to provide them with the best opportunities, I have always questioned and been mindful of ‘over-scheduling’ my children and adding to that already present stimulation.

A healthy balance needs to be struck. Whilst finding the balance will be different for each child, you’ll find it somewhere between being the serial taxi driver racing from one activity to another, and being ok with just letting children play at home.

Health Benefits for the Under-Scheduled Child

Teaches them to be in the moment – to find their own rhythm (how many of us still seek this ability?)

Promotes imagination

Gives their nervous system downtime which promotes “Rest & Digest”, allowing the body to restore, regenerate and assimilate nutrients for growth and development.

Encourages self-learning

Allows for more quality time between you and your child rather than hectic road time, watching the clock.

Fosters a balanced lifestyle where ‘Fun’ and ‘Free’ is free to everyone!

And most importantly, all this makes for a less stressed Mum and Dad…

and ‘No Added Stress’ is as healthy as “No Added Sugar”!

Being a tourist for a day in my own neighbourhood of Manly, Sydney, was truly a days holiday on a shoe string! Amazed at the sights I never realised existed, and yet have lived here for 40 years!

Changing your perspective and being a tourist in your own local area is like changing ‘Ground Hog Day’ living into a healthy sense of ‘Conscious’ living. Seeing things through a different lense forms a new perspective and interaction with life, filled with child-like wonder which can be fun and surprising.

So grab your walking shoes, pack a daypack and camera, water and snacks, and head down (preferably by foot or catch a bus) to your local Tourist Information Centre for the what’s on information, walks and attractions… ready to get lost and be inspired in your own local area.

Organic Juice of the Week –

The MultiV Greenie

Juicing is my daily multi vitamin in a glass. I have juiced nearly every morning for the last 4 years but didn’t discover juicing with green vegetables or organics until recently, and love it!

Today I ‘slow press’ juiced a combo of organic kale, spinach, purple carrots, parsley, a royal gala apple, and an orange… My Greenie MultiV!! I switched to organics two weeks ago and I can really taste the difference and feel the difference. My body craves having a fresh ‘greenie’ juice in the mornings, together with my breakfast, and I no longer feel for snacking until lunchtime. I don’t need to watch my weight, but great for those who do.

Juicing a variety of natural, organic vegetables can do wonders for your health and is a multi vitamin source in its natural form. One of my favourites is super-nutritious kale which I use on a regular basis. Kale may provide significant health benefits, including assists in cancer protection and lowered cholesterol. One cup of chopped kale contains calcium , vitamin A, vitamin C, and a whopping amount of bone-building vitamin K. It is also a good source of minerals copper, potassium, iron, manganese, and phosphorus.

Spinach is a healthy source of fibre and contains many nutrients, including vitamin K, calcium, magnesium, folate, vitamin C, iron, manganese, potassium, tryptophan (good for sleep) and other vitamins and minerals.

It is interesting that while most people consume the orange kind of carrots, purple carrots actually contain the largest amount of antioxidants. Beta-carotene, an antioxidant known for its role in protecting the body from free radicals and lowering the risk of cancer, and reducing incidences of diabetes and macular degeneration – probably what carrots are best known for.

Parsley, the Italian flat-leaf variety, packs a healthy range of vitamins and minerals: vitamins A, B-12, C and vitamin K, beta-carotene, folate, iron, protein and calcium. One-half cup fresh parsley fills 10 percent of your daily requirement of iron and has three times the vitamin C as an orange. The abundant chlorophyll in parsley heightens immunity, lowers inflammation, clears toxins, gets rid of mucus and freshens your breath. Parsley also contains alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid that may also help prevent cardiovascular disease and arthritis.

Royal Gala apples provide dietary fibre, vitamin C and antioxidants. Juicy and sweet, oranges are renowned for their high vitamin C. They also give you the benefit of calcium, folate, potassium, thiamine and niacin and magnesium.

Nutritious and Delicious… Get juicing naturally. Yum!

It seems that life gets faster, streets get busier, more screens and phones can find us and demand our attention, more to do, do, do… our senses are on alert ! As a result, many of us are continually living in survival mode.

To survive, our body has an innate survival behaviour called the fight-flight response. When faced with danger, this automatic response either makes us take flight and ‘run’, or ‘fight’. Today, in such fast paced life, this adrenaline response is triggered by perceived stress or anticipated stress, even though there may be no real danger or risk of harm, like a lion about to pounce on you.

Adrenaline is released to be able react to stress quickly, but prolonged release of adrenaline can cause other health issues. These include anxiety, digestive disorders, insomnia, memory/concentration problems and fatigue. Kinesiology can be very effective to destress the body and mind, and to help reprogramme the automatic fight-flight response to switch off, only to be triggered when in real danger.

Deepak Chopra talks more about the effects of stress and why not to be an ‘adrenaline junky’. The Conscious Lifestyle – Facing Your Stress
